Anne Abrams, marketing/advocacy consultant for the Idaho Commission for Libraries, prepares and motivates trustees and librarians to take on advocacy roles. (Session C5)
Sheila Bannerman works for the Public Legal Education Association of Alberta and has extensive experience in both the library and public legal education fields. Educated as an historian, she is proficient in research and analysis and is very excited about the possibilities for collaboration between libraries and public legal educators. (Session G1)
Neil Barber is the Lottery Funding Program’s Acting Program Manager and Community Liaison Officer for Northern Alberta. Neil spent his first 15 years with Alberta Public Works (now Infrastructure) working on capital project design and project management. His expertise with reviewing grant initiatives is enhanced by his extensive involvement in the non-profit sector in his own community. (Session F7)
Brian Bell was appointed Executive Director, AlouetteCanada, in October 2006 for a multi-year secondment from the Oakville Public Library. Since the merger of AlouetteCanada with the former Canadiana Institute for Historical Microreproductions to form Canadiana.org, Brian has become its Co-Director. He has served as Chair of the Canadian Initiative on Digital Libraries, Chair of the Canadian Community Information Online Consortium, President of the Ontario Library Association and is a member of the planning committee for the Canadian Digital Information Strategy. Brian was presented the W.J. Robertson Medallion for Ontario Public Librarian of the Year in 2007. (Session F1)
Josh Bilyk is Director of Development for Learning Services at the U of A, which encompasses the Libraries, Museums, Collections, Archives, Bookstore, and the University Press. Over the past ten years he has worked on several local, provincial, and national campaigns, with friends groups, fundraising boards, individual donors, corporations, and foundations. (Session G4)
Corinne Bleakley began volunteering with the Friends of the Strathcona County Library in 2001. For the past few years, she has been actively involved in the planning, preparation, and delivery of its successful Friends’ Watergarden Tour. (Session F9)
Christine Bourchier is an Instruction and Reference Librarian at NAIT Libraries, Metro Campus, in Edmonton. (Session B8)
Peter Bruce is the Chief Technology Officer for Library and Archives Canada. He has 25 years experience in the Public Sector focused on using technology to improve and transform governments’ programs, services and operations. Mr. Bruce has a B.Sc. in Computer Science and an MBA. (Session F1)
Valdene Callin has been a member of the Red Deer Library Board since 2003. (Session H10)
Adrienne Brown Canty is the Manager of the Strathcona Branch of EPL as well as EPL’s Representative Project Owner for RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). Born and raised in Vancouver, she completed her MLIS at the U of A. (Session G6)
Pat Cavill has served as President of the Saskatchewan Library Association, LAA, and CLA. After a career in regional and public libraries, Pat has been a consultant to all types of libraries all over North America, specializing in marketing, advocacy, leadership and ethics. She is the team leader for the Library Advocacy Now! program. Pat has won the ALA’s Ken Haycock Award for promoting librarianship and CLA’s Outstanding contribution to Library Service. (Sessions C8, F3, and G3)
Pamela Chislett is presently Deputy Director of the Grande Prairie Public Library. Although she has still not accomplished the goal stated in her high school yearbook of learning to speak French, this latest project has at least provided an environment whereby she is surrounded by French materials! (Session G8)
Helen Clarke is the Chair of the Lois Hole Campus Alberta Digital Library Resource Selection Committee and works at the U of C as Head of Collection Services. (Session F6)
Jerremie Clyde works with copyright at the U of C as a member of a team of librarians looking at copyright and e-reserves. The potential, and desirability, for licensed resources to replace access copy arrangements is of particular interest. He also has interests in intellectual property law surrounding new media and the role librarians should hold with regard to information access and the protection of the creator’s rights. (Session H9)
Ann Craig is a trustee serving on the CPL Board. She is also the area representative for Calgary on the Alberta Library Trustee Association Board. She is on the ALC planning committee in the position of Registrar for ALC 2008. (Session G10)
Ann Curry graduated from SLIS at the U of A and is returning to be the Director of the School. She has enjoyed a multitude of different librarian jobs in academia, public libraries, business and industry. (Session B6)
Shannon D’Agnone is an Instruction Librarian at NAIT Libraries, Metro Campus, in Edmonton. (Session B8)
Joanne de Groot is a PhD student in Elementary Education at the U of A. Joanne’s dissertation research will focus on children’s experiences with public library Summer Reading Programs (SRPs). This research will have implications for library staff when planning and implementing SRPs in their public libraries. (Session B5)
Gail de Vos has been a professional storyteller for over two decades. She has promoted and taught storytelling as a major communication tool at the educational level, in the corporate world and beyond. (Session C7)
Mary DeWalt, Director of the Ada Community Library (Boise, Idaho), is committed to outreach initiatives and community connections. (Session C5)
Merrill Distad, Associate Director of Libraries (Research and Special Collections Services), has spent 34 years building the collections of the U of A and U of T libraries. He and Cameron Treleaven have worked closely together, sharing information and seeking out collections for purchase and for donation. (Session C1)
Leslie Doell holds a M.Ed. (Les études franco-ontariennes) from the U of T. Her experience also includes teaching for over 18 years in French Immersion programs from grades 2 to 12 as well as teaching French at MRC in Calgary. Currently, Leslie is a French Language Consultant for the newly-formed French Language Resource Centre, as well as a French Instructor at Grande Prairie Regional College. (Session G8)
Linda Duplessis is a graduate of SLIS and spent several years as a teacher and teacher-librarian in Alberta, BC, and Ontario. She began work with the Peace Library System in 1993 and was appointed Director in 2001. A member of the TAL Board and APLEN Standing Committee, she was elected Chair of the Standing Committee in May, 2007. (Sessions G8 and H6)
Delia Filipescu graduated from SLIS in April 2007. When she came from Romania six years ago, she experienced the excitement of living in a new country, as well as many of the difficulties encountered by new immigrants. In her position as multicultural community development intern at the EPL Mill Woods branch, Delia has connected with numerous ethnic and multicultural organizations, promoted and improved the library’s existing multicultural services, and developed strategies to increase cultural awareness and give newcomers to Edmonton a sense of belonging. (Session F1)
Bonnie Gray is Manager of Public Library Services with the Libraries, Community and Volunteer Services Branch of Alberta Municipal Affairs and Housing. In Alberta, she has worked with public library staff and trustees on projects related to training and continuing education and spent several years working to create regional library systems. She is currently involved in library policy development and strategic planning, grants distribution, library service planning and cooperative initiatives with provincial library organizations. (Session B1)
Dawn Green is the Community Safety Liaison Coordinator for Strathcona County and a member of the Strathcona County Library Board. For the past 7 years, she has worked extensively in injury prevention, specializing in traffic safety and crime prevention. Her twenty years’ experience in municipal community development work has made Dawn passionate about the health of communities. (Session G9)
Rosemary Griebel is the Assistant Project Manager for Calgary’s new Central Library, and in this role monitors architectural trends and the rapidly changing library environment. She has traveled extensively in North America and Europe visiting bold new libraries in cities as diverse as Seattle, Montreal, Paris and Amsterdam. (Session C6)
Deborah Hicks is an Academic Intern Librarian at the U of A. She is interested in all aspects of change management and explored this topic in her graduate thesis at the School of Information Management at Dalhousie University. (Session H2)
Ellen Humphrey is Assistant Director, Customer Services, at CPL. She is involved in the design and delivery of the Signature Service initiative. (Session F4)
Alexa Jaffurs is Access Services Coordinator for the U of A Libraries, and has also worked at Amherst College in Amherst, MA. Alexa received her MLIS from Florida State University in Tallahassee and has been moving steadily northward ever since. (Session G6)
Maureen Johnson has worked as a page, library assistant, children’s librarian and collections coordinator. As Scholastic’s Library Sales Representative, she enjoys matching the Scholastic list to the needs of public libraries across Canada. (Session C2)
Kathy Lea is an academic librarian at Lethbridge College where she has worked for 30 years. Prior to that she worked at the University of Windsor library. She undertook the job exchange at the end of her career and got approval to try three job exchanges in one year and not the traditional one. (Session H4)
Genevieve Luthy is Customer Services Manager of the Village Square Library at CPL. She is involved in the design and delivery of the Signature Service initiative. (Session F4)
Brian MacDonald has been a volunteer for many organizations for a number of years. His initial volunteer experience began with the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues where he spent several years on the executive. He is currently serving his third term on the Board of the CKUA Radio Foundation. He is the chairman of the Board for the Friends of Strathcona County Library. (Session F9)
James MacDonald is a recent SLIS graduate. His web development experience reaches back to the pre-web days with bulletin boards and extends into today’s open-source content management systems. He currently works as the Manager of Information Technologies at Northern Lights Library System, where for the last year he has been working with member libraries to develop dynamic, content rich websites using Wordpress. (Session B11)
Nancy Mackenzie is CPL’s Manager, Third Floor, Central Library; previously she was Manager, Village Square Library, where many opportunities existed to help residents achieve their potential. (Session H7)
Renate Taylor Majeau has taught for over 20 years with Edmonton Public Schools. She currently works for Alberta Education in the Learner Assessment Branch, as an Exam Manager. She has been involved with the Alberta Assessment Consortium and has served as President of the Alberta Teachers’ Association Greater Edmonton Teachers’ Convention Association. She is interested in applying the fundamentals of leadership practices in a variety of settings and encouraging others to find the leader within themselves. (Session C9)
Carole Marion is the Customer Service Manager of CPL’s Forest Lawn Library. The Greater Forest Lawn community is highly diverse, with large numbers of immigrants, refugees and low income families. Extending the Library’s reach into the community though innovative partnerships has increased its use and positioned it as a gathering place within the community. (Session H7)
Gerry Meek is Director of CPL. Active professionally, he has served as a member of the Executive Council of CLA, President of OLA, Chairman of the Canadian Urban Libraries Council and as Chairman of TAL, APLEN and APLDC. (Session B2)
Bonnie Mix graduated from GMC’s Fundraising Management Program and served the not-for-profit community as a fundraiser for 7 years. She also worked in corporate information technology and adult education. Bonnie has been with the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission and GAIN since May 2003. She combines first-hand knowledge of the charitable sector and licensed gaming events to help charities maximize economic benefit from gaming events. (Session F7)
Bob Muir works with government, library, health, learning and municipal offices on a daily basis, helping them connect to the Alberta SuperNet and identify innovative ways to use the technology to their advantage. He sees firsthand how connectivity can change the way people do business and offer services. Bob brings years of experience and knowledge about the technology industry to Axia’s customers. (Session C3)
Cheryl Nattrass is the Coordinator of the Board Development Program of Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture, which has provided workshops, consultative services, and resource materials to assist the boards of not-for-profit organizations throughout Alberta in topics of boards governance since its inception in 1983. Instructors use a hands-on approach to give board members opportunities to apply new ideas, evaluate current situations, and develop plans for the future. (Sessions G5 and H1)
Wendy Newman has contributed in leadership capacities to university, education, public, and special libraries and as a library educator. A passionate advocate of libraries and access, she has served on such national bodies as the National Broadband Task Force, the Blue Ribbon Panel on Smart Communities, and the Board of Directors of the Media Awareness Network. She served as a mentor for three years at Northern Exposure to Leadership. She is a Past President of CLA and won CLA’s Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award in 2004. She is currently Senior Fellow at the Faculty of Information Studies, U of T, and is teaching the nation’s first advocacy course both there and by distance education to the UWO. (Sessions C8, F3 and G3)
Karla Palichuk has been Director of APLEN since 2003. She joined TAL in 2000 as the Technology Implementation Coordinator for APLEN where she worked with the public library community to coordinate and deliver on-going training to public library staff. Prior to joining TAL, Karla worked in all types of libraries. (Session H6)
Della Paradis is the 2007-2008 LAA President and the Manager of Advancement Services at NAIT. (Session G2)

Carlee Pilikowski began working with Marigold in 1986. She has assumed many positions in her tenure; Office Manager, Consultation Assistant, and most recently Communications Officer. Carlee provides support for programs, workshops, presentations, statistics, as well as providing public relations support to member libraries. (Session H8)
Mindy Pozenel is Product Manager for OCLC. Her focus is on formulating and implementing user-focused discovery mechanisms to meet the standards of today’s internet-based society, to make library resources more visible to Web users, and to increase awareness of libraries as a primary source of reliable information and helpful personal assistance. Mindy has also managed products for Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and SGI. (Session B3)
Lindy Pratch is Teen Services Library Assistant, Centre for Reading and the Arts, Stanley A. Milner Library, EPL. She has worked at EPL since 1989, where she is a member of the Youth Readers’ Advisory Team. She has facilitated a variety of readers’ advisory workshops and has presented at conferences in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. (Session F2)
Maylin Scott is the assistant manager of Library and Academic Sales for Random House of Canada. A former independent bookseller, she enjoys reading literary fiction and mysteries, particularly campus lit and fictional accounts of the First World War. (Sessions B9)
Keith Seel, PhD is the Director of the Institute for Nonprofit Studies at Mount Royal College. He is actively engaged in governance research as well as job quality and policy issues. He is on the Board of the National HR Council for the Voluntary/Non-Profit Sector. Keith is a published author and a well-known speaker. (Sessions B10, C10, F5, and H3)
Craig Shufelt is the Director of the Fort McMurray Public Library. (Session F10)
Michelle Sinotte works as a Librarian at Mount Royal College where she serves as the liaison for a variety of departments from Earth Sciences to Women’s Studies. Currently, Michelle is also the acting coordinator for the Information Services department. (Session G2)
Anne Smith holds a Masters of Public Administration from Queen’s University. Over the last 17 years, she has worked extensively with community groups and organizations. With her colleague Flo Frank, Anne has authored The Partnership Handbook and The Community Development Handbook, A Tool to Build Community Capacity. Both are available through the Queen’s Printer. (Session B4)
Laura Snyder served as Head of Reference and Instruction at the University of Houston Libraries from 1999 to 2006, where service challenges led to experiments in roaming reference. Ms. Snyder is now a music librarian at the U of A. (Session F8)
Barbara Sonnenberg spent several months conducting research to answer the question, “what difference does the Strathcona County Library make in the community it serves?” Barbara holds an MBA in Community Economic Development and has served as trustee and Chair of the Strathcona County Library. (Session C4)
Rosalyn Steele has worked for Canadian distributor/publisher H.B. Fenn and Company Ltd. for ten years, currently handling sales to both the library and academic markets. Rosalyn enjoys meeting and “talking books” with fellow book enthusiasts. (Session C2)
Anne Stevens is Library and Education Manager for McClelland & Stewart and Tundra Books and Regional Sales Representative for Random House of Canada. She ran an independent bookstore for quite a few years, worked for a library wholesaler and has been working for publishers for more than ten years. She has a passion for books. (Sessions B9 and C2)
Cory Stier is the IT Librarian at Red Deer Public Library. (Session H10)
Pat Taviss is a library consultant and change catalyst with over twenty-five years’ experience. Pat has worked throughout Canada and the United States as a consultant, facilitator, librarian, master trainer, and speaker. Her clients include Fortune 100 companies, health care concerns, law firms, manufacturers, high-tech start-ups, nonprofits, government agencies and of course libraries. She has also served as a library trustee. Now based in Arizona, she began her library career as a Children’s Librarian at Grande Prairie Public Library. (Planning for Results Pre-conference)
Laura Taylor is the Consultant/Library Services and Projects with Marigold Library System. She has worked in a variety of library settings including regional, small and large urban public libraries for over ten years. She has been responsible for developing and implementing Best Practices in various library settings. (Session H8)
Jim Taylor is a Red Deer-based adult educator and consultant. He led Red Deer Public Library through their very successful Appreciative Inquiry in 2006-2007. (Session H10)
Robert Tiessen works with copyright in his role as Access Services Librarian at the U of C Library. He has spoken at several conferences on topics relating to copyright, including copyright and desktop delivery and previous analyses of Liberal Copyright Legislation. Rob currently chairs the CLA’s Copyright Working Group. (Session H9)
Grant Tolley is currently Manager of Strategic Planning and Policy with Alberta Municipal Affairs and Housing, in the Libraries, Community and Voluntary Services Branch. His interests and career have been focused on the advancement and development of heritage resources, culture, and the arts in Alberta. (Session B1)
Michelle Toombs is the Customer Service Manager, East Sector, CPL. She is a U of A graduate and has been a CPL employee for 31 years. She has held positions as children’s librarian, branch manager, automated services manager, cataloguer, special projects librarian, and now sector manager with responsibility for seven CPL branches. Her passions are community development, sustainability and partnerships. She has volunteered with the Beddington Heights Community Association and the Community Sustainability Pilot in collaboration with the City of Calgary. (Session G7)
Cameron Treleaven, proprietor of Aquila Books in Calgary, is one of North America’s preeminent antiquarian booksellers. He and Merrill Distad have worked closely together, sharing information and seeking out collections for purchase and for donation. (Session C1)
Lahring Tribe has spent 28 years in the book industry in various capacities, the last 18 with Random House. She is one of those lucky people who gets to do something they love every day - working with good books and great people is an unbeatable combination!. (Session B9)
Kathleen Troppmann has been with the St. Albert Public Library for eight years. She works in Adult Services in the areas of reference, teen services, selection, communications, technology and party planning. (Session H5)
Leah Vanderjagt is the Digital Repository Services Librarian at the University of Alberta. She has served on the Greater Edmonton Library Association executive since 2005 and was GELA’s 2007-08 President. (Session G2)
Mark Vajcner is University Archivist at the University of Regina. Currently working on his PhD, Mark makes extensive use of library and Internet research resources. He has undertaken extensive research within libraries over the past twenty years as a student, researcher, and employee. (Session B7)
Marilyn Wallace is CPL’s Manager of Community Services, a unit established in 2004 to integrate Library services that build strong and inclusive communities. (Session H7)
Andrew Waller is Serials Librarian at the U of C Library where he is involved in the licensing of e-journals and other electronic products. He regularly speaks and writes on this and other topics, including journal and e-journal management, open access, the USA Patriot Act and related legislation, and systematic downloading. Andrew is the incoming Licensing and Access Editor for The Serials Librarian. (Session H9)
Linda Williams, a recent graduate of SLAIS (UBC), is the Consultant/Library Services with Marigold Library System. She has previous experience as a Library Tech in school libraries and with a community library in rural Alberta. (Session H8)
