8:00 - 8:45 pm First Timers’ Get Together
Is this your first time at the Alberta Library Conference? Whether you’re a trustee or library staff, make sure to attend this reception in your honour. Meet some friendly faces, learn how to make the most of the conference and maybe win some terrific prizes! All “first-timers” will be offered a JPL signature cocktail (or something non-alcoholic if you prefer). Get your conference off to a great start and register for this popular event. We look forward to meeting you! Sponsored by Community Services Consulting Ltd.

9:00 - 10:00 pm Opening Reception

The University of Alberta is celebrating its Centenary in 2008! Join our reception sponsor, the University of Alberta Libraries, and toast 100 years of academic history. The Exhibit Hall will be open from 6:30 pm so do a tour through the displays before joining us for refreshments. Sponsored by University of Alberta Learning Services.

D1 8:00 pm Author Talk - Guy Vanderhaeghe and Dave Bidini
Guy Vanderhaeghe and Dave Bidini will speak together on the various challenges of writing books, film, and music lyrics — all collaborative efforts. See Author Talks for more details. Sponsored by McLelland & Stewart.

Sweetest EmbraceD2 9:30 pm Is There a Doc in the House? - Documentary Night
The Sweetest Embrace: Return to Afghanistan documents the intensely moving story of two young men’s journey home to Afghanistan after coming to Canada as refugees 16 years earlier.

Filmmaker Najeeb Mirza takes us on a beautifully shot and intimate journey. This film, still in the final production stages as our conference brochure goes to press, will likely be launched at the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto a day or two before we show it. Be the first on your block!
(70 minutes. Classification: TBA)

6:00 pm Closing Dinner and Social
In the spirit of stepping away from the desk, this year we’re stepping away from the costume theme a time honoured-tradition at ALC. We’ll look forward to reading your reactions after the conference.

So, no costumes, but feel free to get a little “gussied up” as you join your friends and colleagues in celebrating another successful event. We’ll offer some soft dinner music and, as always, there are some wonderful door prizes to be won.

L1 8:00 pm Author Talk - Marty Chan
See Author Talks for more details.

L2 8:00 - 8:45 pm Wine Tasting: Reach Out for wines from less traditional locations
Do you normally head for the wine aisles marked “France”, “Italy” or “Australia”? Let our wine expert introduce you to some high quality, lesser-known wines from places like Austria, Argentina and Portugal. This event is always a sell-out, so reserve early! Limited to 75.

L3 9:00 pm Dance: Step Away From the Wall!
You don’t need a partner to have fun at our dances! Our DJ will provide an eclectic mix of old favourites and recent chart-busters. Join your friends on the dance floor, or mingle on the sidelines. Once again, the great folks at Gale have offered to host your first drink. Sponsored by Gale Cengage.
