Alberta Library Conference 2007

The Alberta Library Conference (ALC) 2008 Planning Committee invites proposals for sessions for next year’s conference in Jasper, Alberta, April 24-27, 2008.

The theme for ALC 2008 is:

Reach Out: Step Away from the Desk

Libraries and Library Boards are changing traditional service delivery in many ways. We are reaching out to our communities, bringing the library to more people, of all ages and cultures, outside the library walls. People in the community are using their library online without ever coming to the Circulation Desk. Reference librarians are leaving the Reference Desk to bring information to students wherever they are, across campus or via social software. Library Boards are taking up the challenge of creating partnerships, and planning to meet the needs of the younger generation and the growing population of the elderly in innovative ways. Our theme this year celebrates these developments and aims to support library staff and trustees in their activities to expand and enhance library service.

Sessions may be of general interest to the library community in Alberta or directed towards the membership of the co-sponsoring organizations: the Alberta Library Trustees Association or the Library Association of Alberta. The committee aims to provide a range of sessions. Proposals of interest to staff and trustees from libraries of all types and sizes are welcome.

Please include with your proposal:

• the session title/proposed topic
• a brief abstract
• the target audience
• a brief summary of the speaker’s experience with the topic
• expected remuneration

Proposals for pre-conference full or half day sessions are also welcome.

We are interested in receiving proposals from trustees for sessions that would provide education and training for Library Board members. We would very much appreciate it if librarians would share this call for sessions with their Boards.

Before you arrive at Jasper Park Lodge for ALC 2007, become a member of their Fairmont President’s Club. Enrollment is free, and you will get many perks, including complimentary in-room high-speed Internet on your next stay following enrollment.

Don’t delay — if you wait and sign-up at the lodge, then you may have to wait until your next stay after ALC 2007 to get these perks.

Internet access will be available at the Internet Cafe in the Exhibition Hall.

What’s new:

• We have added a session about the Rural Development Fund Initiative on Friday, April 27, from 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Stay tuned for more news about this.
• Nicholas Basbanes, acclaimed author of Every Book Its Reader, A Splendor of Letters, A Gentle Madness, Patience and Fortitude and Among the Gently Mad has been added as an Author Talk option on Friday night.

  He will replace Joseph Boyden on the conference programme.

The early bird deadline for the Alberta Library Conference is fast approaching!

Please note that to be eligible for the early bird rate, payment and registration must be postmarked by March 10. Registration forms and related information can be found on our Registration page.

If you are thinking of attending one of the pre-conference sessions on copyright or storytelling, please register early to avoid disappointment since seating is limited.

Due to the overwhelming success of the Alberta Library Conference, all rooms at Jasper Park Lodge are now full. But you can add your name to the wait list by calling JPL at (780) 852-3301. With our new cancellation policy in place, some rooms will become available 45 days before the conference. Jasper Park Lodge staff will start calling people on the waiting list at that time.

Update April 26, 2007 — All ALC Planning Committee positions are now filled.

The Alberta Library Conference Planning Committee is looking to fill the following two-year term committee positions that become available April 2007:

• AV/Room Set Up Coordinator
• Exhibits Coordinator
• Sponsorship Coordinator
• Info-to-Go Editor
• Social Convener
• Webmaster

Please submit your application by March 1st, 2007.

The Committee is inviting applications from volunteers who are members of the Alberta Library Trustees Association or the Library Association of Alberta.

The Planning Committee meets three times a year, usually in June, October and March, as well as at the conference itself. The meetings are always scheduled for a Saturday and have been held in Edmonton for the last few years.
